My name is Dondre Dodson, and I am the founder, a.k.a. the Chief of Thrills of GoodThrillHuntin, a local collectible and reselling company based in Boston, Massachusetts.
Everyone has a reason for collecting, and usually it’s because it reminds them of a specific time, person, or era of their life. Collecting keeps people centered and gives them something to build on while living through the everyday processes of life.
The peace cultivated from diving deep into our past times channels an energy that one could truly only obtain when focused on finding what makes them experience fulfillment.
Happiness comes in many different forms, and being able to spread Thrills through multiple avenues does just that. It’s a connection that will be built on for a lifetime. It may be difficult to believe that one little small thing like trading cards or old video cassette tapes could bring people together, but that’s the power of discovery. While we’re on the search looking for one thing, another thing is on the other side looking for us.
Our main purpose here at GoodThrillHuntin is to enjoy the thrills, obey the thrills, and most importantly, spread the thrills.
I have been infatuated with hip hop and sports my whole life, from owning multiple jerseys and trading cards, going to concerts and sporting events with family and friends, to tearing pictures out of ESPN, SLAM, and VIBE magazines and hanging them on my wall. These very things were a way of life for me, allowing me to create my own world within this world without even realizing it.
Eventually, my trading cards started collecting dust, and those sports posters started coming down as high school and college took precedence.
It was when I started working at TD Garden, the very arena where I and my dad watched my beloved Celtics play when I was growing up, that I got back on the path of Thrills.
I went to my parents house to pick up my collection of trading cards from my childhood. I rediscovered my childhood collection, and going through the many trading cards, I would remember the exact point I received a particular card or traded for it with a friend. It brought back a feeling I hadn’t experienced in a while.
From fourth grade until about my freshman year in high school, I used to collect sports cards and trade them with my friends. Filling up binders with different sets from Fleer, Topps Chrome, Upper Deck, and more. There was no better feeling than opening up a fresh pack or box set and finding a Vince Young rookie card or a Tom Brady league leaders passing yards card. But never in a million years would I think there would be some sort of value behind them.
Now when I say value, I’m not only speaking of monetary gain but also in the sense that people would search far and wide for a card to complete a set of their favorite player or team.
Imagine going into the basement and digging through the very grails of your childhood existence and being hit with the rush of the memories they bring like a swift wind on a winter night. The connections you once held with distant or deceased family members fill your heart with pure joy.
Organizing the cards by players and teams, I embarked on a research journey that would take me for a spin. I started to search for pieces to start new personal collections of my favorite teams and players, specifically the Boston Celtics and the young stars who grace my hometown team like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart (during his tenure here), and more.
I hit my first card show during the summer of 2023 at the Causeway Card Show, learning more, picking up pieces, and meeting collectors of all sorts throughout the day and night. It was that show that fueled me even more to follow the inspiration that was reigniting right in front of me.
Over the past few years, I have been able to build relationships with different collectors, resellers, and buyers across multiple platforms. Meeting sports and movie fans from all over, especially connecting with many who love the Celtics or older cartoons just as much as I do. It’s quite interesting seeing the similarities across the world; even when you’re living in different places than others, there’s always that one thing bonding you together.
This also includes participating in different groups and forums on Discord, Facebook, Instagram, Marketplace, Mercari, and X. Although I have been able to build a revenue stream from these venues, the most important thing has always been connecting with other thrill seekers.
We all know people buy, sell, or trade certain items, but to really get to know a collector is to know their WHY. The power of communication is a lot deeper than words on a piece of paper or words that are spoken between parties in a conversation. You can tell a lot about a person from what they collect or like to partake in in their spare time. WHAT keeps them going even during moments of tiredness and not wanting to do anything at all.
As a person who has been on multiple journeys of finding self and various outlets that bring a certain level of peace, I wanted to add another layer to the Thrills, and that’s where the idea of “Thriller’s Anonymous” came about.
“Thriller’s Anonymous” will be articles and interviews centered around collecting and connecting with collectors of all sorts, ranging across various mediums. Getting to know the Who, What, Why, Where, When, and How’s of their Thrillin’ journey.
On our very first segment of “Thriller’s Anonymous,” we collaborated with our good friend Jacob Leidolf on a piece about his paperback collection of Sci-Fi books on Medium, which can be found at the link attached to this article. Keeping an open mind and heart to others’ situations, likes, and dislikes is crucial to not only a better understanding but also creating boundaries and environments where everyone could be themselves and coexist.
From artwork, media, memorabilia, paperback books, and vintage clothing, this is the zone for you. We are looking forward to building on this even more and being able to not only tell our story but the stories of many other collectors out there as well. Creating a realm that collectors could thrive in and connect with others, fulfilling the thrills.
